What is Arthroplasty?

Arthroplasty surgery or Joint Replacement surgery is an operative procedure in which the arthritic or damaged surfaces of the bone are removed and replaced with something better, called a prosthesis. The goal of arthroplasty is to restore the function of the affected joint and relieve pain. At the beginning of surgery, anaesthesia is administered to the patient. Then a small incision is made by Joint Replacement surgeon at the joint to carefully remove the least quantity of bone to allow free motion.

All About Knee Replacement Surgery:

Knee replacement surgery is a procedure done to replace the damaged surface of the knee joint. A patient needs knee replacement if the knee gives pain or there is stiffness that affects daily life and activities. Zynova Shalby Hospitals is one of the best hospitals for the treatment of knee pain in Mumbai.

If arthritis affects only one side of your knee, you may need a partial knee replacement. Partial knee replacements can be carried out through a smaller cut than a total knee replacement. We have some of the best doctors for partial knee replacement surgery in Mumbai.

A total knee replacement surgery is a procedure where the affected knee joint is completely replaced with artificial prosthetic material. It may also involve replacing the under-surface of your kneecap (patella) with a smooth plastic dome when the original patella is damaged. The metal-plastic combination prosthesis is used in knee replacement surgery. Post-surgery, you will be expected to do physiotherapy which includes exercises for flexibility and strength. Generally, the patient will be able to stand within 8 hours after operation and can walk with the help of a walker same day.

All about Hip replacement surgery:

Hip replacement surgery is a procedure in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant, that is, a hip prosthesis. This prosthesis can be either metal, ceramic or plastic component.

The patient is given general anaesthesia to relax the muscles. The damaged or fractured portion of the joint is removed by cutting the bone with a saw. Then an artificial joint is attached to the thighbone that allows the bone to connect to the joint. The doctor then prepares the surface of the hipbone by removing any damaged cartilage and attaches the replacement prosthesis. After surgery, the patient may be asked to do gentle exercises in bed, such as:

  • Bending and flexing the ankle
  • Contracting and relaxing the quadriceps muscles
  • Gentle exercises may be done for a few minutes each hour to facilitate blood flow
  • Pivoting or twisting on the affected leg should be avoided for a few days after surgery

Most hip replacement patients will be discharged within 3 days, once the pain is under control, and the patient can get in and out of bed and walk short distances and perform day-to-day activities.

What is Arthroscopy?

Arthroscopy surgery is the procedure in which the interior part of a joint is visualised using an arthroscope(camera). It can help detect various problems such as the cause of persistent joint pains, excessive fluid in the joints and damaged cartilage.

The arthroscope is a special type of camera inserted into the joint through a small incision and allows the surgeon a view of the area on a video monitor. A second incision is made for the insertion of tiny surgical instruments that are used both to diagnose and to perform what is needed during the operation—removing damaged tissue, suturing and other repairs. The doctor recommends arthroscopy if you have a ligament tear, loose bodies in joint, or have a joint which is swollen to aid in diagnosis.

Arthroscopic surgery can result in less joint pain and stiffness in the affected area. The patient can leave the hospital on the day of the surgery itself as it is minimally invasive and generally takes less time; it depends on the patient’s overall medical condition. After surgery, the patient may return to light activity within a fortnight. Physical therapy i.e., physiotherapy is necessary to ensure proper healing of the operated joint.
